Here's a question I get asked almost weekly: "How do I get my dog to stop sniffing everything and just walk?"

My answer usually surprises people: "Why would you want to?"

I know it can feel frustrating when you're trying to get some exercise and your dog wants to investigate every square inch of sidewalk. But here's what I've learned after years of walking dogs across the west side of LA.

Sniffing isn't a distraction from the walk or some weird ego-trip that the dog is on, the sniffing IS the walk.

Think about it from their perspective. We get to scroll social media, read the news, catch up on texts, and talk to friends. Dogs get to sniff.

That fire hydrant? That's their Instagram feed.

That tree trunk? That's their group chat.

That patch of grass? That's breaking news.

When we pull them away from these experiences, we're essentially yanking the phone out of their hands mid-scroll. And we wonder why they seem frustrated or unfulfilled.

Research shows that just 15 minutes of sniffing can be as mentally enriching as an hour of physical exercise. It reduces anxiety, builds confidence, and satisfies their natural instincts in ways that structured heeling or power walking simply cannot.
