From Tech Executive to Pet Care Entrepreneur: Lessons in Building a Business on Trust

From Tech Executive to Pet Care Entrepreneur

3 years ago, I walked away from a six-figure tech salary to start a dog walking company.

My colleagues thought I'd lost my mind. My family gently suggested I "think it through." But I couldn't unsee what I'd experienced as a dog owner in LA: inconsistent care, unreliable communication, and a nagging feeling that my pets were just another appointment on someone's calendar.

So I did something terrifying. I quit my stable career and started Betches Walking Betches with one simple promise: treat every pet like they're your own.

Here's what building a business on trust actually looks like:

We don't hire fast. Every team member goes through background checks, earns Small Animal CPR & First Aid Certification, and is chosen for their genuine love of animals, not just their availability. I've turned down perfectly qualified candidates because they didn't light up when talking about dogs.

We don't scale carelessly. Growth means nothing if it compromises the quality of care. I'd rather turn down clients than assign a dog to someone who doesn't know their quirks, their anxieties, or the way they perk up when you say "park."

We notice the small things. A limp that wasn't there yesterday. A change in appetite. The way a senior dog takes the stairs a bit slower. These observations aren't extras. They're the foundation of trust.

The transition from tech to pet care taught me something unexpected: the skills that matter most in business aren't always technical. Emotional intelligence, attention to detail, and showing up consistently matter more than any spreadsheet I ever built.

Trust isn't a marketing strategy. It's earned in a thousand small moments of reliability, care, and genuine connection.

And honestly? I've never slept better.
