The Dog Breed Your Lifestyle Actually Needs

The Dog Breed Your Lifestyle Actually Needs

I left a six-figure tech career to start Betches Walking Betches, and one of the first things I noticed was how many people were struggling with dogs that didn't fit their lifestyle.

And listen - I'm not saying they are bad dog parents by any means, but let's be real and honest about the lifestyle choices you make and have and which types of dogs fit into those lifestyles. Love isn't enough.

A Husky needs 2+ hours of exercise daily. A Greyhound needs surprisingly little. A Jack Russell needs constant mental stimulation. A Bulldog is happy with short, leisurely walks.

Same amount of love. Completely different lifestyle requirements.

I've watched a single parent in Venice thrive with a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel who's content with 30-minute walks and lots of couch time.

I've seen a couple of avid hikers struggle with a Basset Hound who taps out after 15 minutes.

Here's what I wish more people understood before choosing a breed:

Energy level is non-negotiable. You can't train a high-energy breed to be low-energy. You have to match or exceed their needs.

Size doesn't always equal energy. Some small breeds need more exercise than large ones.

Grooming requirements are real. If you don't have time or budget for regular grooming, skip the Doodles and Poodles.

Some breeds are velcro dogs and will follow you everywhere. Others are more independent. Know which you can handle.

Our job is to help dogs thrive in their homes by providing the care their parents can't always give during busy weeks. But we can't fix a fundamental mismatch between breed and lifestyle.

The best thing you can do for your future dog? Be brutally honest about your schedule, energy level, and living situation before you choose.

Your perfect match is out there. And it might surprise you.
